Lois McMaster Bujold, author of the acclaimed Miles Vorkosigan series, is Guest of Honor at FenCon VI. Also, ā€œDoctor Whoā€ writer and author Paul Cornell will be appearing as Toastmaster. Cornell has written episodes of ā€œDoctor Who,ā€ ā€œPrimeval,ā€ and ā€œRobin Hoodā€ as well as various issues of Marvel Comics including the ā€œCaptain Britain and MI:13ā€ series. Along with Doctor Who novels, Cornell has written the novels ā€œSomething Moreā€ and ā€œBritish Summertime.” hoy Matey! West End’s 2009 Block Party Series continues with the 1st Annual Party Like a Pirate: Island Party in the West End. The FREE block party will feature Pirate performing impromptu on the streets of West End, island and beach music, artists and great food. Everyone is invited to dress like a pirate and be a part of the show. The event benefits West End’s Market Street (Ross Avenue to Munger Street) will be the site for the West End Association’s 1st Annual Party Like a Pirate: Island Party in the West End, Saturday September 19, 2009 from 11:00 am – 11:00 pm. Swashbucklers and wenches, palm trees and sand, strolling pirate fiddlers and impromptu sword fights (Argh!), you can even have that special someone shackled for charity at the Party Like a Pirate: Island Party in the West End. More than 10 galleries are participating and will open their doors to the public for art viewing, shopping, live music, food, and drink. The event is free and most people can easily walk from gallery to gallery. The DART Green Line is available to take patrons from the Deep Ellum station to Fair Park. The galleries feature paintings, photography, sculpture, pottery, and performance art in styles ranging from classic to modern. Second Lines is a tribute to Charles Siler’s experience living and working in the city of New Orleans. The show features paintings, original illustrations and post-Katrina reflections.
