Soviet moon rover Lunokhod 1 found after 40 years in lunar wilderness
Came to a halt some 10km from its launch site, but now it’s become a cause for great excitement back on Earth, particularly for UC San Diego physicist Tom Murphy.
Murphy works on the APOLLO Project , which aims to test several aspects of Einstein’s theory of gravity by tracking the moon’s orbit and distance from the Earth.
They’re already bouncing lasers off reflectors placed on the moon from three Apollo missions, as well as one from Lunokhod 1 .
The lost rover’s deployment vehicle was spotted in a high-res shot from NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter.
Murphy’s team followed the track evident in the picture to get a bearing on the rover and were delighted to find that it didn’t fall into a ditch and was actually parked at an angle perfect for their purposes.
Murphy claims information beamed back from Lunokhod 1 will enable the team to find the exact centre of the moon, which he hails as the final piece of the Einstein puzzle.
However, the happiest of all was Ruslan Kuzmin, one of the scientists who originally worked on the Lunokhod missions.
When he was shown pictures of it deployment vehicle, Kuzmin wrote a thank you note to the NASA team , saying it gave him a “very special feeling”.
“I felt a deep interior excitement due to the welled up memories of the earliest “pages” of my science career,” he wrote.
The next lunar rover mission – a joint effort between Russia and India – is scheduled for 2013.
