And so, when the visions came, she only lived with the sick feeling alone for minutes. When she related the details to Tommy, he listened quietly, then he questioned her, like he’d question a witness. It ended up getting better details out than she got alone, which made her feel almost useful. His frankness and gentleness always calmed her quickly. She had startled it, but he had the feeling she needed to control it, for now. She was skittish, and he didn’t want to scare her away. Aside from the whole dream thing, she interested him. Hell, she more than interested him. It was all he could do to stop himself from pulling her flush against him and having her as his dessert. Tommy and Claire continued to date, at first, casually, then more, through the winter and into the spring. Claire was slowly overcoming her years of self-imposed solitude. She started hanging out more with people from work, volunteered at Habitat for Humanity and became friends with some of her fellow volunteers. And she spent time with Tommy – a lot of time with Tommy. She was getting used to cuddling and being hugged and having someone to help her through the aftermath of enduring the death of a child. They rarely mentioned the visions or the crimes related to them when they were together as a couple. It wasn’t an elephant in the corner; it was simply a side discussion that had no place then and there. And since she was working so hard on getting resolution for the poor shades, they didn’t haunt her quite so much as they had in the past. The original visions were more visceral, and physically sickening, but the aftershocks were almost non-existent. Terri Ross, the Daily News reporter, had overheard enough of the conversation in the coffee shop to get an interest.
