I would look forward to the "Splat" part. I would say it along with Mom as best as I could ("sbah!"), as I held on to my tattered neon-green baby blanket, after I'd finally relaxed in her lap after repeated, strenuous efforts at escape. (For some reason, when I was that age, wriggling free of Mom's lap was always a very important priority.) She was goofy. She delighted in filling the place with rubber spiders and plastic jack'o'lanterns for Halloween. She signed all her notes to our nephews as "Wonderful Aunt Judy", and all her notes to us kids as "Wonderful Mom". I remember watching the video for "Ana Ng" , and Mom wandering in, peering at the screen, and grinning. "That's nice," she said. "They look like they're having so much fun." She couldn't hear the music, mind you. She started losing her hearing in her late twenties, when Katherine was a baby. By the time I came around, Mom was profoundly deaf. Oddly, this didn't stop her from singing, loudly, in the car, wildly off-key. I can remember her listening to her old Simon & Garfunkel Concert in Central Park cassette tape at near-distortion volume. She got the kids and the house, which was a big plantation home out in Oldham County, a former summer home for some or other rich industrialist back in the 1900s. She sold that place, kept a sliver of the property, and had a smaller place built on that parcel. And so that's where she lived, in the little brown house out in Pewee Valley, around forty-five minutes from the city, where Katherine, Thomas, and Betsy all lived. It's a little harrowing to look back at that and realize that she led the sort of life that I'm naturally inclined to lead. I think I inherited the introversion and the adherence to routines that led to her quiet, cat-centric life on Wooldridge Avenue. I suppose it's just dumb luck that I've stumbled into a life where I get to have lots of friends and creative...
