How Delta Airlines Ruined a Perfect Trip
My fantastic, glitch-free week in New York came to a horrible, screeching halt on Saturday, March 13, when my trip was unhappily extended and Delta Airlines treated me (and all other passengers) like crap.
I had an inkling on Friday that things weren’t going to go well the next day. The weather report was for high winds and heavy rains. I called Delta to see how much it would cost to change my ticket from Saturday afternoon to Friday night–MORE than the original price of the roundtrip flight. At the time, I couldn’t justify that, but in the end, I would have paid more to avoid the mess and frustration I encountered.
Got to JFK way early for my 1:20 flight, breezed through a nonexistent security line, and found a quiet corner to sip a cool beverage and read a book until departure time. It was almost too good to be true.
Got to gate, and flight was delayed 25 minutes. No big deal. We boarded the plane, taxied out to the runway…and sat for over 2 hours waiting to take off. The pilots would rev up the engines, then turn them off. Rev then off. The wind was shaking the plane a lot, but at no time did the crew indicate that we weren’t going to leave due to the weather. Finally, we were next in line for takeoff, and Captain Springer, one of the pilots, came on and said that we had had a mechanical problem during our wait, that he thought he had cleared it, but the problem (some sort of engine light) was back and he didn’t feel comfortable clearing it again himself, so we were going to the gate to get it fixed. He said a gate agent would be happy to help us with any connecting flight problems.
We returned to the gate, had to walk down steps outside to exit the plane (it was like a hurricane at this point), all of our gate-checked luggage was soaking wet, and then we had to walk through a freezing, tented maze, and climb a couple flights of stairs to get back in–nice modern facilities, there, Delta.
