Mrs Pratt’s claims came after a weekend which saw an explosive book by political commentator Andrew Rawnsley allege that Cabinet Secretary Sir Gus O’Donnell, the top civil servant, had to take the Prime Minister aside and urge him to curb his ‘volcanic temper’.
The Cabinet Office insisted that Sir Gus had not launched an inquiry into allegations against Mr Brown or issued him with any ‘verbal warning’, but the denial did not rule out that the pair had a conversation about his behaviour.
The Prime Minister, who launched Labour’s campaign for the forthcoming election on Saturday, felt moved to make a pre-emptive TV appearance denying that he had ever physically assaulted staff, a claim which does not in fact appear in the book, The End of the Party.
Extracts of the book published by the Observer claim Mr Brown grabbed an aide by the lapels and shouted: ‘They’re out to get me!’, forced a Number Ten secretary out of her chair and took over from her at the keyboard, and thumped the front seat of his car so violently that a bodyguard sitting in it was frightened for his safety.
The book portrays Downing Street as a place dominated by the Prime Minister’s dark moods, temper tantrums and outbursts of rage on hearing of political setbacks.
It also details simmering tensions between Mr Brown and his Chancellor Alistair Darling, and tells how Justice Secretary Jack Straw held meetings with Labour MPs plotting the Prime Minister’s downfall believing he could seize the top job. Downing Street dismissed the allegations as ‘malicious’ and ‘without foundation’.
