UP, Amports host Chinese business party
The Union Pacific Railroad sees Benicia as a major transportation hub for incoming vehicles, especially those shipped form Japan, Australia and South Korea, said Randy Scott, general manager of Amports’ Benicia Terminal. So when Union Pacific last week hosted an eight-member Chinese executive business delegation, it made sure they saw the Port of Benicia, a business partner of the railroad company.
Some of the delegation — including General Manager Yu De — were from Anji Automotive Logistics, the largest automotive logistics service provider in China. Others, including Vice President Ge Jinhua, represented China Railways, a massive company that operates nearly 40,000 trains daily.
“Benicia is to the Union Pacific as Richmond is to (Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway),” Scott said, explaining the port’s partnership with the railroad.
The Chinese visitors saw a tri-level transport car, Scott said, something new to them: China Railways has two-level cars, but not three-level.
The tour of the Port of Benicia gave the visitors a chance to see two key operations, Scott said. One was the ease with which vehicles brought to Benicia are transported to their destination. The delegation was impressed, Scott said, with Benicia’s proximity to the interstate, rail service and a deep-water port.
“Benicia is ideally suited for the transport of automobiles,” Scott said. “They go from ship to pier to train.” The speed at which cars can be removed from ships and be on their way often surprises those who see it for the first time, he said.
“Benicia is a very strong auto port,” Scott said — in fact, it is the Northern California hub for the domestic distribution of Fords and Chryslers.
“They go to Benicia first,” he said.
The local port receives between four and five auto ships a month.
Still, that’s a drop from two years ago, when 25 ships would visit each month, Scott said. It’s an indicator of the worldwide economic recession and changes in the automotive industry, he said.
