How do we get rid of the sulfur smell from our water?
First, are you on well water or city water? Have you isolated what type of sulfur is the cause (sulfate, hydrogen sulfide) From your question, the source is not the hot water heater, so it now move up the line to the source.
If on city water, call the city and let them know. If on well water, you need to treat the problem. But before dropping chemicals down the well head, talk with the state water department to ensure what you are putting down the well is OK!
Carbon filters are effective for treatment for hydrogen sulphide (H2S) but have limited effectiveness (as you mention in your posting.) You can get a green sand filter which is considered an oxidizing filter. These filters similar to those used for treating iron issues. You will need to periodically back flush the filters – the head unit typically will take care of that automatically – I would recommend a filter with a Fleck 5600 head. These units are the bomb and in place for decades without problems, we used them at the copper mine I worked at for years!
